05.16.08Still around…
Sorry, just haven’t been in the mood to write lately. I’ve been in a weird funk. I think just too much going on at once. I’m looking forward to July! At least 75% of my major problems will be solved (or too late to do anything about) by then.
I have had things I want to write about, but the mind just hasn’t been working, and the words haven’t been coming so easily lately. I want to get my Star Fox 64 re-review up and going. And a few observations on people and daily life. So the thoughts are still churning, just gotta figure out a way to get ’em out!
I’m heading down to Wichita this weekend. So I’ll likely be away from the computer for the duration. Hopefully it will be a nice get away and I can come home refreshed and ready to face the world.
Strike One
Got my rejection letter from the FSA yesterday. Apparently the interview DID go better for someone else, ha ha!
Still kind of excited had a good phone interview the other day for a tech job down around Wichita. Gotta harass ’em until I get a live interview. It’d be right up my alley and quite a bit more money, so I’m hopeful for that.
Also have a phone interview with a radio station in Great Bend tomorrow at 9:00 am. Don’t really want to just make a side move, but I am getting desparate to get out of here!
I’m also exploring to options of finding a better job in the Manhattan area. Andrea got a new job here Saturday that pays a bit better and has better benefits. We’ll just look at all the opportunity we have an try to pick the best.

Scored another interview.
With a different company. I applied with a hospital doing tech work there and got a call today to set up a phone interview. Kewl. They said they’re looking to fill positions in Wichita, Hutch and McPherson. We’ll see what happens!
Returned from the wild west.
Welp. Had a pretty good trip. Job interview went well from what I could tell. Hopefully it didn’t go even better for somebody else.
Stopped by the old dealership. Gagnon Motors, not in business anymore. But I did get to catch the owner Mr. Gagnon himself! He actually remembered the car when I threw out the name of the guy that bought it. Even remembered what color it used to be! Pretty cool.
Said they stopped selling GM in 2000 and after a fire in 2002, he just salvaged what he could and uses it for his own shop. Had a good time talking to him, and he seemed to enjoy seeing the car and talking about the old days.
For me it was kinda cool to see the car come full circle. Not too many cars go 230,000 miles and make it back to where they were sold after 23 years. I bet when he sold this car in 1985 he didn’t expect it to outlast the dealership. 🙁
While I was out in BFE, I drove out to castle rock. Take I-70 to the middle of nowhere, then head 14 miles south down a dirt road and you find Castle Rock. Saw a sign for it while I was enjoying some DQ in Quinter, KS and had some time to kill so I figured what the hell.
So I guess even if I don’t get the job, I at least had an enjoyable day off.

A look back: Top Gear Rally
Although you might not think so looking at it today, Top Gear Rally was one of the coolest racing games on the Nintendo 64 back in the day. Made by what would become another of my favorite studios, Boss Studios, it was the first in a line of great racing games by them. Going clear back to the days of playing Rad Racer and RC Pro-Am on the original Nintendo, I’ve always been a fan of the racing genre. Whether it’s the arcade racers like Cruisin’ USA or more realistic games like this one it didn’t matter much to me.
I don’t exactly remember how I happened upon this game, but I want to say it was a Christmas gift in 1997. I hadn’t heard of the game except read a couple reviews in Tip & Tricks, and I don’t recall picking it out myself. Either way it turned out to soak up another significant portion of my childhood.
The coolest thing about the game was how “realistic” it was. You wouldn’t think so looking at it today, but there were some pretty impressive features as far as details go back then. The cars actually acted like they were sitting on real a suspension. You could see the tires bump and absorb changes in the road surface and the cars would lurch to one side as you went barreling around a corner. Not too much to get excited about these days, but back then it was sure something to behold.
At the time it was the most realistic racing game I’d ever played. Up until now I’d only really experienced Arcade style racers. Where you take 90 degree corners at 100+ MPH, and the break button was just there for looks. In stark contrast, the cars in Top Gear Rally felt very heavy, taking time to react and carrying a good amount of momentum with them. You have to use a little more intellegence to keep your speed up and get through a track without constantly sliding off the course. The physics weren’t perfect though. While slightly clunky, the cars were also very “floaty”. Going too quickly over the crest of a hill would lift the wheels off the ground and put Sir Isacc Newton in the driver’s seat. I’d be lying though, if I didn’t say how fun it could be to send your car sailing through the air and finish with a spectacular end over end crash. Very satisfying.
Another cool feature was real time damage. It wasn’t quite precise, but the more you slammed into walls or other cars, the more mangled and distorted your car became. You didn’t suffer any performance penalty, but you always ended up with an amusing looking vehicle by the end of a race.
As if the game hadn’t already outdone itself, Boss included the Paint Shop. While a bit cumbersome with an N64 controller, you were given access to the equivilant of MS Paint to create your own textures for your car. I remember spending a long time, messing with the Paint Shop feature alone. Unfortunately it required almost an entire Memory Pak all to itself! The files were huge, realitivly speaking. But it was just plain cool to go out there and race in a car that you designed, rather than being stuck to a built in generic design.
All in all a very fun game. I’ve had a lot of fun in the past week or so re-learning how to play. It’s a very simplistic game in retrospect. You don’t really race against the other cars, they just run preset speeds on a preset line around the track. It’s not much more than a glorified time trials mode a la Gran Tourismo. Still the half arcade half sim feel is a perfect balance and very fun. I finished up one whole season and unlocked the Milk Truck! Back in the day I must have played quite a bit because I remember unlocking a helmet car, taco car, and even an ice cube car. Weird.

So I got this Twitter
From what I can tell it’s kinda like the Facebook feature that displays what you’re doing at the moment. Although twitter is intended to be used all the time, I guess. You can hook it up to your cell phone too and text your twitter, so that even if you aren’t near a computer you can still share with the world all of your impressively interesting exploits. I don’t have a text message plan, so that counts me out of that feature. Luckily I’m never more than 100 ft. from internet access.
I’ve added my Twitter feed to the blog as you see to the right. I don’t really like the layout, but I’m not springing for the editable CSS code so that’s as good as it gets I suppose.
It seems like a great stalker tool and I know there’s a few people out there that would like an easier way to keep tabs on me. I figure Twitter is probably the best way to do that.

Wedding stuff just about taken care of…
…as far as I can tell. Got my wedding band ordered today. My ring finger is only one size bigger than Andrea’s! A size 7. I have spindly little fingers. I went with a titanium ring since it’s supposed to be pretty tough. And it was fairly cheap! As cheap as rings get in a jewelry store anyway.
I’m starting to dread things less and less as more seems to be taken care of. I think we found a DJ and hopefully a photographer. After that it’s just get the tuxedos ordered. Bring it!
