Guitar Hero-ific

I figured since Duane would head out on the road right after Christmas I would let him have his PS2 and Guitar Hero early, while he is home for a few days and can play. He loves it.

I’m just not sure that ‘Guitar Hero’ is the right name for the game. I am halfway across the house while he is playing right now and I don’t hear any music. There’s just a “clack, clack, clack, clack-clack, clackity-clack-clack” resounding in the house.

I think it should be called “Clack Hero”. Ha-Ha!!

I’ve got skillz.

Well in Guild Wars you can get “titles” for certian accomplishments. Some of them more meaningful (relatively speaking) than others. For instance if you beat all the missions you get the title “Protector of Tyria”. One particular title I am persuing is “Drunkard” which you receive for being ‘drunk’ for 1,000 minutes. It’s a pain in the butt because you have to double click an ale every minute for 1,000 minutes to get the title. I thought it was pretty dumb that I had to sit there for 1,000 minutes just staring at the screen, double clicking every 60 seconds.

So with the help of a piece of software called AutoHotkey I was able to write a simple little script that double clicked every 60 seconds for me whether I was there or not! Why do all the mundane work when a computer can do it for you right? I had to go back to the days of old, back when I programmed a coin toss program where you could bet whether or not it would be heads or tails on an old Ti-86 graphing calculator in High School. I figured if I could do that, I could make a computer click a couple times every minute.

So wait, I paid money for a game so I could make a computer play it for me…wha?

Miis!

Out station is (supposedly) giving away a Nintendo Wii this Friday. I say supposedly because until today they said they weren’t sure if they were going to be able to get one in time. But I’ll believe it when I see it. Our backup plan is apparently to write “You won a Wii…as soon as a store gets one…someday.” on a paper napkin and hand it to the winnner.

ANYWHO we were doing some promoting on the website so I made Miis for all the DJs at miicreator.com!

It’s a great time waster. I’m not sure who to make next!

Gamespot takes a hit to their credibility.

From Penny-Arcade:

For those that aren’t familiar, Gamespot is a site dedicated mostly to reviewing video games before their release and passing those opinions on to consumers so they can make more informed decisions.

Apparently one of the editors, Jeff Gerstmann, gave a sub-par review to a game called Kane & Lynch for the XBox360. The developer of the game has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars with Gamespot along advertising this one game. Coincidentally shortly after the review went live the video review was pulled and Gerstmann was promptly fired without reason. Say what you will but it looks like the stink of it is, you aren’t supposed to give a bad review to a game that is brining in lots of ad revenue.

I honestly hadn’t even heard of the Gerstmann fellow until this story came about. I just don’t run in the game editorial circles anymore I guess. Supposedly he’s had some pretty controversial reviews to high profile games in the past. Some people love him some people are glad to see him go. Fact of the matter is, this isn’t about Gerstmann. Its not even about the gaming industry alone. It’s about objectiveness in reviewing a product, be it a blender, or a new car. If an advertiser is able to pressure a company into fluffing a review in order to boost it’s sales of that product, and then the publisher in turn sells that review to the reader as an “objective” opinion, the review is nothing more than a long winded advertisement.

Its just another example of corporate mismanagement and bottom line thinking. You’re selling out the credibility of your publication if you fire the guy at all. And even IF you decide he must be fired, the timing has made the decision so transparent that you could have done more harm by letting the person go than if you hadn’t. Its long been a suspicion of readers that the people that review the products (or the publishing company) gets some sort of kickback, or incentive to paint a more colorful picture to the public. Unfortunately this event all but proves that it can and DOES happen.

How about some nostalgia?

One of the best damn games, best damn movie, best damn song, ever! I stumbled across this and it brought back a lot of good memories. Of course the GoldenEye Fests, but also sitting there for hours trying to beat the times on each level to unlock the cheats. Memorizing everything. Somewhere between Mario Kart and the IGA I lived and breathed GoldenEye, and to a lesser extent just Bond in general.

Not to mention the 15 days of 007 that TBS used to always run. I remember I’d set the computer up next to the TV and watch all the movies and play along with the trivia that they did live on the internet. You could chat with other people that were watching the movies just a really cool experience. It was leading up to the release of Tomorrow Never Dies in the theater and they were marketing the hell out of it. I remember it all plain as day. I was so juiced about it back then. Its one of those times in life you just wish you could go back and do all over again, ya know?

More Guild Wars stuff.

Been playing the new expansion lately. Got me some sweet “slim spectacles”. Apparently they’re tough enough to be considered “armor”!

“Hmmm….probably a trap.”

Loving the environment though. Kudos to the artists.

So that’s about it. Didn’t have much else to post about. So you get a GW update. haha. Sorry all you non-nerds!

Oh so close!

Welp T -4 hours until my vacation officially begins. I’m in the home stretch now. And you know that feeling on your last day where you know you’ve got your time off coming and you just don’t feel like doing a damn thing? Yeah, I caught that bug. My mind just keeps drifting to all the things I want to get done while I’m off. I’m not actually going anywhere on this “vacation”. Just getting away from work for 5 days. And thanks to the holiday, it’s only costing me 2 vacation days!I plan on getting the Toronado finished painting and getting all the trim back on. So I’m looking at probably working 10 hour days Thursday and Friday to get that done. So hopefully it’s all shiny and back together by Saturday when Andrea’s family is heading up and maybe I can make that old hooptie turn some heads.

I’ve got lots of Guild Wars to play since Eye of the North is coming out on Friday. I’ve been kinda slacking on the car lately because I didn’t want to get burned out on the project, and I’ve really been having some fun playing GW in the meantime. Here’s a few pics of the new expansion.

Getting “drunk” in Lion’s Arch waiting for the preview last weekend.

Starting out:

So I’m looking forward to having my car back, not having a whole lot planned, and just a lot of relaxing.  That’s my kind of vacation!

I’m not “hardcore”.

I just realized today after messing around on the IGN Message Board, that I’m not a “hardcore gamer” anymore.

The poll was:

Is there anyone else who considers themself a hardcore gamer, and only owns a Wii?

  • Yes, I am a hardcore gamer, and I only own a Wii (117 votes)
  • No, I am a hardcore gamer, and I own Wii and 360 (47 votes)
  • No, I am a hardcore gamer, and I own a Wii and PS3 (5 votes)
  • No, I am a hardcore gamer and I own a 360 and PS3 (10 votes)
  • No, I’m not a hardcore gamer, but I only own a Wii (5 votes)

I realized I don’t fall into any of those categories. There was a point in time not too long ago that I had a Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox and plenty of games for all of them. But I haven’t picked up and really haven’t played any of the new consoles at all. I guess that doesn’t make me “hardcore” like I used to be.

I don’t know that my interest in video games has decreased a whole bunch, I still often find myself wishing I had more time to play. And according to my Xfire profile I’ve racked up almost 300 hours playing Guild Wars. But it’s just not like it used to be back in the day. Not that I wish I were a hardcore gamer like before, I just didn’t realize I wasn’t anymore until I read that poll. Never really thought about it I guess.
