The Essential 50 Archives from 1UP.COM
ok this is kinda cool however I disagree with some of the games one there becuase I dont think they are “essential” because the only Zelda that made it was LoZ: OoT and even it was at number 40 where’s LttP or the Original LoZ. I would think these two would be on the list but apparently they are not essential. Hell not even the original FF made it on the list FF VII did aparently everyone is suppose to just skip to FF VII forget about the other 6 before it or the 5 after it just FF VII. I do not understand what makes VII better than any of the others it’s Final Fantasy. come on Parappa the Rapper made it on this list I think we need to shoot some one here and revise their list.

I was confused as hell when I first saw that list. So many games that aren’t on there, and so many that are. But then I realized, it’s not really a “best games” list. It’s a “defining games” list.
From 1up.com:
“These are the innovators — the creations which shaped entirely new genres. The revolutions that launched great designers to fame. The concepts that inspired countless other games. And of course the failures that brought mighty corporations to their knees.”
E.T. for instance. Perhaps single handedly responsible for the video game crash in the late 70’s early 80’s. Not a good game at all, but a significant game, none the less.
This makes the list make a bit more sense. But the most puzzling omission is the absence of the original Legend of Zelda. Truly a defining game. Yet it’s not to be found.
I think the fact that the original Final Fantasy is missing from that list, is because it was superceded by Dragon Warrior, which was really the first successful RPG video game. While not nessicarily the best, it kickstarted the RPG genre.
Lack of GoldenEye also perplexes me, as it single handedly made FPS games on consoles a viable genre. Perhaps the most popular genre now in this present day.
I have a few quams with the list, but considering what the list represents, it’s a good timeline of the industry.
